PORTLAND MARATHON ~ OCTOBER 6, 2002

This is Saturday night, October 5, at the Team in Training pasta party.  In the photo, from left to right, is Susan's sister, Sheila, Sybille, Susan, Janine, and Carolyn.  This was an awesome party.  Some amazing people spoke at the dinner.  Two special people in particular were our "Leukemia Doc" and a cancer survivor.  The Leukemia Doc read letters from his patients, and told about leukemia/lymphoma-related cancers.  He is the reason why we are doing more marathons for TNT.  The second speaker was a young woman who two years ago was given four weeks to live.  Her husband ran the race with us on Sunday.  What an amazing night this was! This is my wonderful support team.  From left to right again is Judy Kammler, campaign manager for Tri-County walk/run groups, Janine, and Julie McClellan, team captain for the Rancho Cucamonga walkers.  Julie was a true mentor to everyone.  She pushed when we needed pushing and helped when we needed help.  She is a true inspiration.  She wasn't even supposed to come to Portland, but she didn't want the team to do this alone.  She and Judy were at the 12 mile and 22 mile markers handing out oranges, chips, licorice, and bananas.  They cheered for us every step of the way.  Julie has said that Janine could do it, and she was right.  Thank you Julie for all of your help and wisdom, as well as your support in Portland. This is the Rancho Cucamonga walking team at 5:45 Sunday morning showing that they are ready to go!  Julie and Mel told us to wear throwaway sweatshirts or jackets in the beginning of the race.  This way, after we were warmed up, we could just toss them aside.  The marathon organizers pick up the clothing and give it to a good charity.  If you are wondering why Janine has the pink shirt on, this is why!  It was gone after the first mile!  You will notice markings on everyone's arms and faces.  TNT gave us tatoos to wear.  You can also see some writing around the team logo.  The group used puffy paint the night before to write their names and the names of their honored teammates names.

Here's the walking group are at the starting line with Joe.  He is one of the runners from our group.  What you can't see in the picture is the other 8,000 people waiting for the gun to go off! There was a lot of entertainment along the way to keep everyone going.  There were a ton of live bands, a harpist and, around the 19th mile, these belly dancers!

Many of you think we are all nuts for walking/running 26.2 miles, but this lady here was probably in her seventies.  On her back was a sign that read, "This is my 31st marathon.  How about you?"

Alas, here's the finish line, the arch of balloons, and food!  As you walk up to the mat they read off your city and name.  As Janine was getting close to the line, the announcer said, "And from Yucaipa, California, -- Janine Stolze.  And she's looking pretty fresh.  Are you ready for another marathon?"  Janine gave him a huge smile and a thumbs up! At the finish line, from left to right, is Cliff (a runner in our group), Julie, Carolyn, Janine, and Mitch (the running coach for Orange County).  Cliff came out after running his marathon to wait for Susan and Carolyn.  He actually walked back two miles to wait for them.  He's another saint with TNT.  Last but not least, there was the victory party on Sunday night.  Janine is in this photo with Julie on her left and her friend Debbie on her right.  Debbie is a friend of Janine's from junior high school.  They have only seen each other once in the last eighteen years!  She met Janine at the finish line.  (She lives in Oregon.)  She was so awesome.  She was waiting with the group for Susan and Carolyn.  She was so in awe of the event and TNT in general that she decided to do the Portland Marathon with Janine and TNT next year!  Thank you Debbie for being there.  You are awesome!  Oh, the group actually danced the night away on Sunday! Yes, after 26.2 miles, we still danced!
